Meridian release methodology
Background
In the past, Accruent used a release methodology of major, minor, and update releases. For example, version 2017.1.1 indicates major release 2017, minor release 1, and update 1. Beginning with Meridian 2018, our release methodology has changed slightly in order to simplify it for our customers and partners and to deliver new functionality sooner.
Description
The methodology comprises three levels of software releases:
- Tier 1 – Introduces new features that are identified by the year in which they were released, for example, release 2018. They will continue to be delivered as a Windows Installer package (.msi).
- Tier 2 – Introduces incremental improvements to a tier 1 release such as support for newer versions of third-party applications and new options for existing features, for example, release 2018 R2. Secondary releases also include any prior secondary releases and updates. They will be delivered as a Windows Installer package (.msi). Each tier 2 release is independent of the previous tier 1 release.
- Tier 3 – Introduces fixes for existing features until the fixes can be included in the next tier 1 or tier 2 release of the software. They will be delivered as a Windows Installer patch (.msp) or as replacement files. Each patch is specific to the previous tier 1 or tier 2 release.
This new methodology reduces confusion about which is the latest release to install. All tier 1 releases, tier 2 releases, and patches (if any) will be available for download and they will include all changes from the previous updates.
Our goal is to release at least one tier 1 and one tier 2 release for Meridian each year. A tier 2 release may be superseded by a tier 1 release. For cloud products, expect quarterly releases of new functionality. New features in Meridian Server will not necessarily be included in the Meridian Cloud release that occurs at the same time and vice versa.
The latest available tier 2 release and updates will be listed in the article in this knowledge base that corresponds to the tier 1 release, for example, Meridian Enterprise 2017 minor releases and updates. The release notes for each tier 2 release or update will be separate articles in this knowledge base that correspond to the specific tier 2 release or update, for example, Meridian Enterprise 2017.1.1 server and workstation update (2017 R2).
We recommend that you install the latest tier 1 or tier 2 release and then any subsequent updates and patches for issues that you are experiencing until the next tier 1 or tier 2 release and then install that. Only install the same bit-wise version of an update as the installed version of Meridian Server, whether 32-bit or 64-bit.
