Scopes

Meridian manages a wide variety of documents and the information about them. Scopes are a way of limiting vault functionality and information to named sets that are easier to understand and use. You may select a scope that more closely meets your needs without experiencing information overload.

A scope is used to control the visibility of commands, views, and documents in PowerWeb. By default, PowerWeb provides the following built-in scopes that each correspond to a branch in the vault structure. Click the links below to see the default user groups each scope is associated with, and the actions permitted per scope role.

For information about changing the current scope, see Select a Scope.

Impact of Scopes

Scopes limit your ability to create or work with the following objects:

  • Commands

  • Document types

  • Folder types

  • Workflow types

  • Project types

  • Reference types

  • Navigation views

  • Reports

Scopes also limit some Meridian functions:

  • Folder access is restricted to a folder and its sub-folders that are defined by the scope.

  • Searches are restricted to accessible folders.

Note:

You may not work with any other objects than those defined in a scope. If no scope provides the functionality or folder access that you need, select a different scope or consult a System Administrator.

For example, a vault used for managing facilities might define scopes for master documents, design projects, archived documents, or maintenance management. A vault used for managing AEC documents might define a different scope for each customer. And a vault used for manufacturing documents might define different scopes for standard parts, active projects, and inactive projects.
