Overview of how AutoVue is used in BlueCielo products

Background

Oracle AutoVue is included with the following BlueCielo products for viewing documents: Meridian Enterpise, Meridian Explorer, and BlueCielo Project Portal (Kronodoc). The article gives a high-level overview of how specific AutoVue products are employed in BlueCielo products.

Note:

The AutoVue 2D and AutoVue 3D integration implemented in Meridian 2021 R2 will remain available but we no longer test or maintain it.

Description

Oracle AutoVue has been used in BlueCielo products for many versions, beginning with the Windows ActiveX control for AutoVue 2D Professional in Meridian Enterprise. Initially, the control was provided as an optional alternative to the BlueCielo viewer. In more recent releases and in other BlueCielo products, the client/server Java applet AutoVue Enterprise Visualization (AutoVue, for short) has also been supported. In release 2013, the BlueCielo viewer was discontinued and AutoVue 2D Professional became the default viewer. In order to support 64-bit client PCs, which had become the norm, and because a 64-bit version of AutoVue 2D Professional is not available, AutoVue Enterprise Visualization became the only viewer available in release 2014.

AutoVue 2D Professional and AutoVue 3D Professional Advanced

These Windows applications were supported on 32-bit Windows versions only, their development has been discontinued by Oracle, and they are no longer included in any BlueCielo products as document viewers. However, the BlueCielo IFilter is based on the AutoVue programming libraries for Windows. When the BlueCielo IFilter is installed on a Meridian Enterprise or Meridian Explorer server, a copy of the latest available version of AutoVue 2D Professional is installed in a special location on the server so that the BlueCielo IFilter can use the libraries. The program is not intended for use as a document viewer, is not integrated with the client applications, and may be a different version than the applet that is included with the product for document viewing.

AutoVue Enterprise Visualization

AutoVue Enterprise Visualization is the only AutoVue solution available for 64-bit Windows platforms. AutoVue is platform-independent and can be deployed two ways, client/server deployment and desktop deployment.

In the client/server deployment scenario, the AutoVue server is installed on a Java application server. The AutoVue client applet is downloaded to the client computer upon use from the server and runs in the local Java Runtime Environment that must be installed separately. The client/server deployment is best for Meridian Enterprise and Meridian Explorer web browser users and for Meridian PowerUser users who do not use solid modeling applications or work with very large CAD or image files, which perform poorly with this deployment. Meridian Enterprise and Meridian Explorer can share the same AutoVue server.

In the desktop deployment scenario, all of the AutoVue server and client components and a dedicated version of the Java virtual machine are installed on the client computer. This is the default way that AutoVue is installed by the Meridian Enterprise client setup programs. No special installation steps or configuration are required by the customer. The lightweight Java servlet server and the applet run in the local Java Runtime Environment. The desktop deployment is best for Meridian PowerUser users who routinely use solid modeling applications or work with very large CAD or image files, which are viewed directly from the local workspace of the client computer for best performance.

Both deployments of AutoVue appear as AutoVueWebViewer in the Viewer Options dialog box in Meridian PowerUser and Meridian Enterprise Web Client.
