Configure Centralized Workspace

Since its inception, much of the technology upon which the BlueCielo File System driver (AMFS) was designed has changed significantly. Some of those changes now make the driver very difficult to maintain, and other changes make it difficult or impossible to support some new features in Meridian/TeamWork. As a result, the driver will not be updated with new functionality and will be discontinued in a future Meridian/TeamWork release yet to be determined. Our primary objective in this change is to help our customers to migrate away from AMFS. Customers currently using AMFS should first consider migrating to local workspace (LWS). A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages between LWS and AMFS can be found in the BlueCielo Meridian Enterprise Administrator's Guide.

However, for some organizations, local workspace is not an attractive option due to its decentralized topography and weaker security. Those organizations can benefit from centralization similar to AMFS without the disadvantages of LWS by configuring a third option, centralized workspace (CWS).

Description

Centralized workspace is a method of configuring the local workspace feature of Meridian/TeamWork to use a shared network location on the Meridian/TeamWork application server. In all other respects, CWS works the same as LWS. With CWS, instead of being stored on users' PCs, cached documents and metadata are stored in a centralized, more secure location that can also be backed up regularly. The users' changes are also still available in case of client PC failures.

To configure centralized workspace:

  1. In the shared location, create a folder for each user with the name of the user's Windows account and grant that user Full Control permission to the location. This is necessary so that the required sub-folder structure and files can be created and stale files removed during synchronization. Users do not need permission to any other folders in the centralized workspace.
  2. Enter the shared location (for example, \\MeridianServer\CWS\) in the WorkSpaceLocation value of the following registry key on every Meridian/TeamWork client computer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cyco\AutoManager Meridian\CurrentVersion\Client

This setting is also described in the BlueCielo Meridian Enterprise Administrator's Guide.

  1. Synchronize CWS with the vault either manually or by waiting for the next automatic synchronization as described in the BlueCielo Meridian Enterprise User's Guide. After synchronization, the local workspace folders on the users' PCs may be deleted to reclaim disk space.
  2. Add the shared location to your regular backup procedure.

We encourage customers to comment on the future of AMFS, local workspace, and centralized workspace by submitting a support ticket in our Issue Registration System. We value your feedback to help us make Meridian/TeamWork work better for you.
