End of Microsoft Support for SQL Server Compact

SQL Server Compact is used in Meridian for external tables and user database management. However, Microsoft support for SQL Server Compact ended in July 2021.

Meridian Installation

SQL Server Compact is no longer required for using Meridian, but it is still required for installing Meridian and for converting a lookup tables database. This occurs due to dependency on the default user database, which is in SQL Server Compact format. Installers of future releases will not require that.

Note:

SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 is required for installation. Edition 4.0 is required for converting a lookup tables database.

Follow these steps when installing Meridian:

  1. Install SQL Compact 3.5.

  2. Install Meridian.

  3. In Meridian Enterprise Administration Console, enable the Use Enterprise Server for user management option, as described in Configure the Connection to Meridian Enterprise Server.

  4. Uninstall SQL Compact 3.5.

Alternatives to SQL Server Compact

SQL Server Compact is no longer required for using Meridian.

To use Meridian, you can choose from the following alternatives to SQL Server Compact:

  • For user management: Enterprise Server instead of Meridian user DB (Meridian 2010 and newer).

  • For tables and lookup lists: MS Access (MDB), SQL, or ORACLE Server queries (all Meridian versions).

  • For LWS (local workspace): SQLite (Meridian 2019 R2 and newer).
