Internet Explorer End of Life: Impact on Meridian

Microsoft announced that the Internet Explorer end of life will be June 15, 2022. With this date rapidly approaching, we recommend you use Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge offers an “IE Compatibility” mode. This mode provides essentially the same capabilities as Internet Explorer. Meridian supports Edge in IE Compatibility mode, as described in Web Browsers.

For many organizations, IE Compatibility mode is not a practical option because it has the same security issues as Internet Explorer.

Without IE Compatibility, the following functionality is not available:

  • ActiveX controls

  • Java add-ins

Most of the functionality in PowerWeb is available without relying on ActiveX. The next section describes which functions require ActiveX.

Impact on Meridian Functionality

If ActiveX and Java add-ins are not available, the following Meridian functionalities are impacted:

Dependency on Java add-ins

  1. The AutoVue viewer, in both desktop and server deployment

Supported in AutoVue but not in PDFTron

Note:

The file format coverage of AutoVue is not supported in Meridian Portal. Use PDFTron when sharing markups with external partners through Meridian Portal.

  1. Highlight full-text search term in the viewer

  2. Report of differences between AutoCAD drawings

  3. Measurements

Dependency on ActiveX

  1. Locally installed viewers

  2. Compare document metadata between documents or revisions

  3. Print a batch of documents with redlines

  4. Print a batch of documents with a dynamic print stamp

  5. Download a batch of documents in PowerWeb without LWS client

  6. Download a batch of documents as individual files (PowerWeb and Explorer)

Mitigation and Roadmap

The table below details the possible mitigation of these issues and the releases with planned product improvements to address them. The number in the first column refers to the numbered list above.

End of AutoVue Support

As communicated in 2021, Accruent decided not to continue its support contract with Oracle for AutoVue.

The existing integration will remain in place. But, going forward, AutoVue will be regarded as any other third-party viewer.

Accruent does not guarantee support for future versions of AutoVue. However, if you have issues viewing documents in AutoVue, you can still contact Accruent Support.

If the issue is determined to be with AutoVue, we will direct you to contact Oracle for support and patches.
