AutoCAD X-Ref Error: “drawing file is not valid”
When working with X-Refs (referenced files) in AutoCAD, after completing any workflow step, you might receive the following error message when opening the drawing from the vault:
"drawing file is not valid".
AutoCAD generates this error message.
Solution
A corrupted .dwg file causes this error.
To solve this issue:
-
Get a valid copy of the same .dwg drawing used as X-Ref drawing.
-
Put the corrupted X-Ref drawing in the Change state.
-
Replace the X-Ref drawing with the valid version of the drawing.
This fixes the issue to all drawings that use this same X-Ref as a reference file in AutoCAD.
If you don't have a valid copy of the corrupted X-Ref drawing saved in your machine, you can get it from previous revisions in Meridian. See also: Recover Prior Revisions from Backup.
Alternatively, you can use the AutoCAD RECOVER tool to get a valid copy of the drawing.
